League: National Baseball Hall of Fame

History: Johnny Bench was called up by the Reds in 1967. None other than Ted Williams predicted great things for the youngster, saying he “would be a Hall of Famer for sure”. Bench won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1968, the first time this was achieved by a catcher. His finest season was in 1970, when he hit 45 home runs and had 148 RBI, leading Cincinnati to the pennant. Bench was the World Series MVP in 1976, won ten Gold Glove awards, and was the NL’s RBI leader three times. He was inducted into the Hall in 1989 with 96.42% of votes on the first ballot.
